HOW Design Conference
Conference: Fill Your Head -
New Orleans, Louisiana
Speaking Topic: Web Design Accessibility
Speaker: Dianne McKenzie
Description:
Accessibility and Usability are important factors in creating a successful Web site. Although the World Wide Web has the ability to put a lot of information out to a huge audience, it can also be a source of frustration to people with disabilities. At the fundamental level, Web accessibility is the core of usability.
Accessibility, from a usability viewpoint, means designing the user interface to be effective, efficient, and satisfying to all users. Accessible design solutions focus on with making Web sites perceivable, operable, and understandable.
In this session we will explore the guidelines, standards, laws, and policies for building accessible Web sites that enhance the user experience. By examining examples you will understand how inadvertently accessibility barriers make a Web site harder to use and how other features can enhance the ease of use.
Creating a truly universal design that is user centered, incorporates accessibility by designing inclusively for the widest range of users and environments and avoids the pitfalls of self-referential design solutions.
Objectives:
In this session, attendees will learn how to:
- Deploy specific techniques for developing accessible web sites
- Use cascade style sheets to make accessible web pages that are easy to update and are consistent
- Integrate an inclusive universal design process with accessibility features for a user centered design solution
